Location

Canmore is ideally located in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, next to Banff National Park, provincial parks, Kananaskis Country, and other protected wilderness areas. The town is an hour drive from Calgary and all the facilities of this world-class city, including its international airport.

Lifestyle

In Canmore it is possible to achieve a balance between work and pleasure in a breathtaking natural environment. A positive lifestyle increases productivity and creativity through inspiration and motivation. This makes for satisfied workers, and decreases workplace turnover rates.

Growth Opportunities

The health and wellness sector is showing incredible growth potential. Already, various support services, holistic and alternative medical programs and facilities are available or are in the process of development in the Bow Valley. There is also significant business potential in the areas of tourism (soft and hard adventure), environmental technologies (sales, consulting, engineering, research, and environmental pilot facilities), software development and other technology related businesses, retail, and business services. There are plenty of opportunities to get in on the ground floor of an expanding economy.

Telecommunications Infrastructure

Canmore has among the best communications infrastructure and fiber optic rich, broad band, bi-directional networks of any town in Alberta, enabling businesses to compete on a global scale using high speed telecommunications. Canmore residents and businesses have access to high speed cable access (Shaw), ADSL, Wireless and ISDN (Telus). Alberta SuperNet, a high-speed, high-capacity broadband network linking government offices, schools, health-care facilities and libraries will also soon be available.  It's a pathway that lets government, educators and health care workers share and deliver information and services province-wide, and faster than ever before with private investment already underway to offer this to the private sector.

Community

Canmore is a “high energy” town with a young, well-educated, well-traveled and enthusiastic population. The population of 11,458 permanent residents, and 2,763 non-permanent (weekenders) is six times larger than it was 20 years ago. The high-rate of growth has stemmed somewhat in the permanent population with the highest growth rates now appearing in our non-permanent population - the weekenders or vacation home owners who wish to participate in this lifestyle. Many look to eventually retire here, as they wind down their careers globally. Volunteerism and participation in community is strong, reflecting a citizenry active and passionate about their future and the future of the town.

Economic Advantages

Canmore is located in the province with the lowest overall taxes and best business climate in Canada. Alberta is the only province without provincial sales tax, and we have the lowest fuel taxes in Canada. Alberta has had one of the fastest growing economies in Canada over the past five years, and it is the only province in Canada able to boast a “debt-free” status.  Experts continue to predict Alberta as one of  Canada’s economic leaders in the future.

Environmental Sensitivity

Canmore has achieved a successful balance between growth/development and environmental sustainability. Businesses, citizens and government realize that the mountain environment is Canmore’s key attraction, and are diligent about efforts to preserve the integrity of our natural environment. Wildlife migration corridors - swaths of land 200 to 300 metres wide - are protected from development and land adjacent to these corridors is subject to strict guidelines for development.  In fact we are finding these protective measures are actually enhancing the attractiveness of the area.  Sustainable development became a priority long before sustainability became a buzz-word and will continue through the energy of our highly active community.
